Armenia itself is a landlocked region in southwester Asia - bordering Turkey and Iran. The Armenian people and culture, however, are spread throughout the world. Modern communities exist in Massachusetts, California, and Illinois. Older Armenian communities exist in Turkey, India, Israel, and other areas of the former Ottoman Empire. Many communities were founded by Armenian tradesmen as they brought business to the area; others were inside the borders of historic Armenia when they began. The communities in Iran began when the Persian Shah deported entire communities to new locations.
